When I found out I had to get a document from Italy that this whole process teeters on, I was worried if it was ever going to happen. I knew that I can't go to Italy to get a document, and I've heard you can hire people in Italy to get these papers, but some would take your money and do nothing. So plan B was to find someone in Italy to get this paper.
My aunt that had been doing genealogy for our family said that she had a connection through what I remember her calling the "Daughters of Italian Heritage" or something along those lines. She was in Las Vegas, Nevada at the time, so possibly the Order Sons and Daughters of Italy in America which looks to be a pretty interesting group. She had mentioned that the organization has connections in Italy that would be able to (probably for a price) facilitate getting this document.
Sidebar: I just checked out the site I posted in the last paragraph and wow that looks great! Membership to that organization is $35 a year and has a lot of 20 to 30% discounts to many places. I think I might join. Anyway, they also had a 10 to 20% discount for www.MyItalianFamily.com which looks a bit more reputable than the next one I'll talk about.
Another website that I ran across that is a mixture of looking for last names in different areas and being a company that could possibly help you with finding documents in Italy. Warning: I have not tried this company, nor even contacted them. Use at your own risk! I found this site while looking for names in Sant'Arsenio, The link that I saved in my notes was: https://www.italianside.com/campania/salerno/santarsenio/genealogy/ which you can see in the URL, Campania, the region, Salerno the province, Sant'Arsenio the city, and I guess genealogy.. for.. genealogy. This website says they are one of the companies in Italy that have direct access to the documents in Italy and can also help you with dual citizenship.
