Make Your Appointment

Last updated: December 9th, 2023

Molto Bene!  Looks like you qualify!  Congratulazioni!  Even back in 2019 when I started this process, the first thing I kept reading was to book your appointment as soon as you can.  This, of course, is if you are planning to apply for your dual citizenship at an Italian consulate in your country.  There is another option; you could go to Italy for a few months, get residency, and apply at a commune there.  I'll talk about what I did, and then the other option below it.

Applying in your country through an Italian Consulate

I lived in Phoenix at the time so I was in the Los Angeles jurisdiction.  I made this loosely drawn map of the US to show the jurisdictions in this country.  I recently added the map for the UK as well to the WIKI.  At the time in 2019, there wasn't so much chatter about the wait times.  I can't prove it, but I do believe the political climate in the US is pushing a lot of people to get their dual citizenship, maybe to leave?  Maybe as a backup plan?  Either case, from the time I started to about 2020, there has been an incredible ramp up in applications for Italian Dual Citizenship so you'll want to get your appointment as soon as you can.

Some consulates in the larger cities New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago, etc have wait times in the years. While some other consulates have shorter times, you must go to the consulate in the jurisdiction in which you live.  I've heard of people considering moving jurisdictions and I've seen responses that it may work, or the consulate may have wanted you to be in the jurisdiction for a period of time.

How do I book an appointment?

When I started this process, on April 22nd 2019, there was a website at prenotaonline.esteri.it, but that no longer exists.  I wasn't able to actually book an appointment online at that time because the system wasn't online.  I had to call a toll free number which cost about $17.50 to just book an appointment.  It was a bit worrying to give a credit card number to some stranger on the phone with a thick Italian accent, but I used a credit card so I could shut it off just in case.  There was nothing to worry about, though, as my appointment was booked and got the email stating so.  Here's an excerpt of my bank records with the transactions for the phone call that you will not have to make.  And yes, you can see a short history of poor dietary choices..  Those have not stopped.

When my phone appointment was booked, it was booked for January 31st, 2022.  "Whoa", I thought about the 2 and a half year wait, "That's-a long-a time-a".  Little did I know that that was actually a pretty short time compared to some of the other times I've heard about through the LA consulate - some up to 8 years.

Now, for you new people just starting, you have prenotami.esteri.it which from what I hear is a website that mostly works.  You can create an account and schedule your appointment if you can find one.  I have not personally used this system, but I have read many times on r/juresanguinis on Reddit that the system doesn't work all of the time.  Sometimes they will bring the site down for reasons unknown.  From what I've heard you should try early in the AM in the US because that is when the system "resets" in Rome.  Here is a link to another website that speaks to this in depth.
